Safety Platforms has sold its ladder guard product to a national house building company based in the north of England. The customer expressed concern that their sites were vulnerable to trespassers using ladders on site scaffolding to gain access to incomplete properties. Also they were concerned to deter children from climbing ladders on site and the potential for injury and subsequent compensation claims that could follow from such incidents.

Safety Platforms ladder guards are constructed from powder coated steel sheets and have a padlocking system to secure the guard to the ladder. Measuring 330mm wide and 1500mm long the ladder guard fits all ladders and makes it very difficult for any unauthorised access to scaffolding.

Health & Safety Executive inspections find one in five sites fail safety checks.

In a month long initiative HSE inspectors visited 2,363 sites and nearly one in five were subject to enforcement action after failing safety checks. 631 enforcement notices were served, with 451 ordering work to stop immediately until the situation was put right.

The HSE stated that significant factors were lack of stairwell edge protection and inadequate working platforms

Said Philip White, HSE’s Chief Inspector of Construction:
“This initiative has once again shown us that the majority of construction employers do take their responsibilities to their workers seriously”.
“However, our inspectors also encountered numerous examples of poor practice, from lack of edge protection on stairwells and scaffolding to unsafe storage of flammable materials and inadequate personal protective equipment. None of these are acceptable on a modern construction site”.

“HSE will not hesitate to use its enforcement powers against reckless employers. It is they who continue to make construction one of the most dangerous industries in which to work.”

Safety Platforms was approached by the housing association to supply them with our wide folding platform to ensure that their maintenance team had an en131 industrial/construction rated product. With a static load rating of 150kg (20 stone) and a duty rating of 115kg (18 stone) the folding work hop up platform conforms to all European and British standards for site use and ensures that employees are using the correct equipment and stay within health and safety law both protecting the employee and the employer from any contravention of health and safety regulations. Unfortunately and unknowingly some contractors and maintenance companies are using budget hop ups that are only rated for light/DIY use leaving the possibility of the platforms failing under everyday site conditions.
